Colour beyond opinion

Book of Hue is a colour reference system connecting design, pre-press and print. It combines a physical colour reference with a digital workspace, giving designers, brand teams and print professionals a shared basis for choosing, communicating and reproducing colour.

The system helps maintain the same colour across different papers and printing technologies. Where a colour lies within their shared reproducible range, production values can be adapted to each process to reproduce the same colour target.

Dedicated Pre-Press and Production levels are already in development, with early R&D access for Early Birds customers planned for late 2026 and regular releases progressively from early 2027.

Start with Reference and Workspace Lite, included with every book, or upgrade to Designer for palette creation and colour reproduction assessment.

A physical reference connected to its colour data

Placeholder

Book of Hue Reference

Explore colour through organised charts and smooth gradients. Adjust lightness and chroma while keeping a consistent hue direction, then identify a specific patch for discussion, measurement or further work.

Placeholder

BoH Workspace

Find that patch in the digital edition, inspect its colour values and download individual colour data in Lite. Upgrade to Designer to build palettes and assess their predicted reproduction against standard print profiles.

How the two work together

  • Choose on paper. Find a hue, refine lightness and chroma, then compare neighbouring patches using a viewing mask.
  • Identify the colour. Record the patch identifier and edition so everyone can refer to the same physical sample and data.
  • Continue in Workspace. Look up your selection in Lite. With Designer, bring colours into palettes and assess them against standard print profiles.

Keep the colour across changing print conditions *

* A brand colour may appear on coated packaging, uncoated stationery and digitally printed materials. Each process can require different production values to reproduce the same colour.

Book of Hue connects a shared physical target with the data and tools needed to manage those differences. Within the gamut shared by the selected processes, colour can be maintained by adapting its reproduction to each set of print conditions. Where the target falls outside that shared range, the system helps identify the difference and assess alternatives before production.

Workspace Designer provides reproduction assessment using standard print profiles. The upcoming Pre-Press and Production levels extend this workflow to advanced file preparation and production colour management.

Explore colour with a structure you can follow

Start with the hue you need. Move through the chart to adjust lightness and chroma, the intensity of the colour. Compare nearby choices and use the gradient to see the transitions between them.

The charts were developed using a proprietary method designed to preserve a consistent perception of hue as lightness and chroma change. The grid gives each defined colour an address; the gradient helps you understand what lies between the patches.

Once a colour is chosen, its patch identifier and edition connect the physical sample to its data in Workspace.

For the moment when colour becomes a shared decision

Use Reference to discuss alternatives with a client, refine a brand palette or give a production partner a physical target. A patch can be inspected and measured as well as named.

The physical sample defines the intended colour. The achievable result depends on the chosen process, substrate and finishing; critical colours still need an agreed proof or production test.

Choose the format that suits your colour work

Use Reference to discuss alternatives with a client, refine a brand palette or give a production partner a physical target. A patch can be inspected and measured as well as named.

Reference MG

A more compact format for everyday design work and client conversations. Its grid offers clearly separated choices while the accompanying gradients reveal the transitions between them.

Placeholder

Reference LG

A larger working format for closer comparison. The denser grid gives you more defined choices within each transition, with larger patches to inspect and measure.

MG and LG together

Use MG when a compact reference is more convenient and LG when you want a finer choice of defined patches. Activate both editions in Workspace to search across your collection or work with a selected reference.

Each edition has its own colour data. Matching patch addresses in MG and LG do not necessarily describe the same colour; always include the edition when sharing a selection.

Pre-order your first- edition Reference

Secure a copy from the limited Early Birds allocation of the first edition. Every option includes Workspace Lite with ongoing access, plus special upgrade pricing and the opportunity for early R&D access to the upcoming Workspace levels.

Early Birds pre-orders close on 25 November 2026, subject to availability.

A colour reference backed by measurement

Book of Hue Reference is produced using dedicated colour preparation and measurement procedures. The main charts are printed on G-Silk without additional finishing, using Konica Minolta AccurioJet 30000 sheet-fed UV inkjet technology.

For the MG edition, process control included around 76,000 measurements of control patches, while verification of the reference colours involved more than 100,000 readings. Measurements taken at different stages of production were used to establish the final colour data for the edition.

Each patch in an edition has one final measured reference value shared by its copies and the corresponding Workspace data.

Your Reference continues in Workspace

Placeholder

Activate your physical Reference in BoH Workspace to access its corresponding digital edition. Workspace Lite is included with ongoing access and becomes available when your book is dispatched.

Add further Reference editions to build your collection.

Workspace Lite included with every Reference

Look up a patch, inspect its measured values and find the closest available matches to a CIELAB colour.

  • Browse the digital charts and find a patch by its identifier and edition.
  • Inspect CIELAB in and measured CIELAB out values, with available M0 and M1 data.
  • Enter a CIELAB colour and find the nearest patches in your activated Reference collection.
  • Download available spectral data for individual colours in CxF or CGATS format.

Workspace Lite is included without a subscription renewal. Palette creation and palette exports are available in Designer.

Workspace Designer for working with palettes

Bring your colour choices together in editable palettes. Compare their predicted reproduction against standard print profiles and export the data you need for your design workflow.

  • Includes all Lite features.
  • Create, organise, name and save palettes, including their revisions.
  • Add colours from Reference and work with your own colour values and measurements.
  • Add your own brand colours from external sources.
  • Explore neighbouring choices in hue, lightness and chroma.
  • Assess gamut and predicted colour differences using standard print profiles and your chosen tolerances.
  • Export palettes to Adobe ASE in Lab or, where complete conversion results are available, CMYK for the selected standard profile.
  • Export available spectral data in CxF and CGATS formats.

Workspace Designer is available at launch as a paid upgrade from within your Workspace account. Every higher Workspace level includes the features of the levels below it.

Screen previews help compare colours and predicted changes. Reliable visual assessment depends on the display and viewing conditions; a preview does not replace an agreed proof for a critical colour.

From design decisions to production control

Workspace is expanding beyond Lite and Designer.

Pre-Press and Production are already in development, with capabilities introduced progressively as each level becomes available.

Workspace Pre- Press

For preparing colour decisions for print. Planned tools include spectral analysis, PDF colour audits and advanced PDF preparation with protection for brand colours. The aim is to maintain the required print standard while making informed use of a technology’s available colour range.

Workspace Production

For managing colour across production. Planned tools include colour conversion, proofing and matching printed output to an agreed reference, together with support for transferring jobs between devices while maintaining visual continuity. Advanced PDF audits will also support print-cost estimation and technology selection.
